I dont know about you but clam chowder is my all time favorite soup...Second is oyster stew. But that's another blog because today, it's all about CLAM CHOWDER!!!
If you dont already know, I'm from the South and we all know the South isnt known for their clam chowder at all. We're more of a chili and gumbo type folks. So I eat clam chowder every chance I get. I can't say I've had clam chowder from Boston yet because that's where the good stuff really is I'm sure. What I can tell you is my chowder experience in San Francisco. I was there about a month ago and yes, sorry I'm late as usual! I get discourage about blogging because nobody reads this stuff! :( but who cares I'm still going to blog!
Anyway, I must tell you about the best clam chowder I've ever had....so far. I was in San Fran for a week and I had chowders at two different places. All the tourists go to the Ferry building and some people just stay there and eat. I, on the other hand, asked around for my friends who's been there before and recommended, Scomas. Scomas is known for their clam chowder and lucky me, the week I was there was restaurant week in San Fran. I was able to try their clam chowder plus a scrumptious crab salad for under $20!!! (see picture for crab salad) I dont normally order salads because it's over priced at restaurants and it's rabbit food. I'm not one of those girls that orders a salad at restaurants. I'm the type that orders a steak and appetizer! maybe that's why guys are scared to take me out. LOL jk
Okay now inside the Ferry building there was Hog Island Oysters restaurant and they claimed to have the best clam chowder..Well, trust me...they don't. Their chowder was more like a stew...and it was no flavor in that broth. They cooked the clams with the shell and I got annoyed picking out each one at a time just to eat. Too much work for lunch there people!!!! I suggest you just skip this touristy area all together and go all the way down. Go pass the bread company place, pass the even more touristy area with the crab stations and then turn right. Scomas is hidden so you won't find it if you don't know what you are looking for. And when you get there, get the clam chowder!!! it will not disappoint!!! You can really spend the whole day down here walking around...took me an hour just to walk down to pier 47 for Scomas from the Ferry building. HORRIBLE WALKING EXPERIENCE I MUST TELL YOU!!! but it was all worth it for that bowl of clam chowder *drools* I would have taken the green line but I didn't know my way around so I didn't want to get lost and put me back even more for lunch. Nothing stops a hungry Asian girl on the hunt for some good clam chowder I tell you!!!! >_< NOTHING! My foot was sore and swollen after that walk and I had to take the green line back to the Ferry building...lol
Anyway, these are pictures of the two clam chowders I had in San Francisco...left is from Hog..see? it doesnt even look good! its like a stew! and that is not how clam chowder is suppose to be. The one on the right is from Scomas...Now that is how clam chowder suppose to look like!
